Bye Bye Paleo!

Hi everyone,

Hope you all enjoyed the beautiful weather we had over the weekend. I was debating about going out for a ride on my bike but I chickened out. I hate cycling when I’m cold — my fingers especially, so I decided to wait a few weeks until it’s a bit warmer.

So after about 3 weeks on the Paleo diet, I can honestly say, it’s definitely not for me. Not to say, that there aren’t parts of the diet that make perfect sense to me, but as a very active person, it just didn’t provide the necessary carbs needed to a) fuel my workouts and b) restore my energy/glycogen reserves post-workout. After about a week and a half on the diet, my workouts started to suffer. My legs, in particular, felt fatigued and sore before I even had a chance to get started. It took my body about 3 days to recover after a 20k run a few weeks ago, which was not standard protocol for my body. So, I decided to return to my diet which I have been following for as long as I can remember and sure enough, my body feels right again. I have the power and endurance back in my muscles and my workouts thankfully, are back on track.

I guess the key takeaway from all of this is that if you’re an active person (and you all are!), you need your carbs to fuel your workouts, get you through your busy day, and help your body to recover after you’ve pushed it to the limit. Choose your carbs wisely, cycle them around your workouts and your body undoubtedly, will be running like a well-oiled machine.

Have a great evening!
